Dear Chris,
In reply to your questions:

  1. Is this web-site primarily about 'exclusive' brethren cf 'open' or Plymouth brethren?
  2. Where are the details on your site about what happened in 1959 etc?

The major part of the reply is posted on
Guests: My Answer 2: Happenings of 1959.

Thanks for visiting 'My Brethren' and for your questions.

Yours in the Lord, Gordon.

From: Chris Dann
Wed, 7 Feb 2001

I was brought up in an 'open brethren' denomination, and have over time found it to be of advantage in general life and well-being to no longer associate as such.

You said: "MB is a growing site – opened in November 1998 – and, as yet, does not cover all historical developments. There are, however, a number of documents available dealing with the events of 1959 and following which will be posted as time permits. When these are posted you will find a notice on Guests: Site News: New Activity".

  1. Also: From looking into the history of Unions and Unionism it is apparent that in the mid-1800 the terms 'open' and 'closed' were used for voluntary/compulsory membership.

    • Is there any substance to my considering that the brethren took these terms from the union distinction already in vogue at the time?

  2. Do you have strong views on the use of the 'Darby' version of the bible?

    • Do you have info available on it?

To: Chris Dann
Fri, 09 Feb 2001

Dear Chris,
Before I address your questions may I ask,

Now as to your questions:

  1. Regarding "the terms 'open' and 'closed' ". I have never heard or read – in the various historical accounts – any suggestion that those terms might have been derived from trade unionism.

"Open" is commonly used, but "closed", or occasionally "close", is far less used to my knowledge. The common term is "exclusive".

Usage of the terms seems to vary. I have even heard both "closed" and "exclusive" applied to certain "open" meetings – Gospel Halls – considered rigid or "tight" as to reception.

My comments are based on knowledge of the situation in North America, and to a lesser degree as to "exclusives" only in Britain and Australasia.

  2. Regarding JND's translation:

The balance of the reply is posted on
Guests: My Answer 2: The Darby Bible.

I trust this will be of some value to you, and look forward to further contact.

Yours in our Lord, Gordon.

Dear Alistair,
What a pleasant surprise to receive your e-mail. I had seen your "story" on Dick's page some time ago, and have just now gone over it again.

I had wondered if you were related to CD. I'll be happy to send you the balance of his poems and I'm sure you will enjoy and profit from them, as I have. Be patient though, I will probably send them by surface mail.

My experience has been different from yours. I came in from "outside" – as we used to speak – in 1950, the year you were born.

I have sought to serve Him in the gospel whenever there was opportunity. As a younger man, for many of the years from 1960–70, I felt the Lord's support in preaching almost every noon hour on a downtown street corner – mostly alone.

While I later became disillusioned and – temporarily only, thank God – forsook principles which had moved me as a young believer, His matchless grace has drawn me back to my beginnings.

Awaiting your address.

Yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.

My address is …

My great-uncle Charles had three brothers;

Joe had three sons, Albert, who emigrated to Sydney in the thirties

I remember hearing that Charles went out originally to Canada with Louis (or was it Lewis) Samuels ….

I think society has changed, people these days are much less likely to listen to an open air, and most of the new Christians I have met in recent years have been converted through Christian friends …

That is one thing I miss [the Lord's Supper and the service of God].

On your site you mention an Andrew Robertson. There was a man of that name from Toronto [actually, New York] who took fellowship meetings in Glasgow in the early to mid-sixties … Is this the same person?

Love in our Lord Jesus, Alistair.

Thu, 18 Feb 1999

Dear Alistair,
The 3 booklets of Charles Deayton's poems were sent to you by surface mail on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999.

Re your inquiry: Andrew Robertson is undoubtedly the same person, but the report you have of him is not as I understand the facts.

I hope you will visit MB again. I hope to be able to add other items of interest and spiritual value, if the Lord will.

Yours in the Lord, Gordon.

Uncle Charles' poetry books arrived today. Many thanks.

I look forward to spending time perusing them. They seem to come from another era when poetry rhymed and scanned, unlike so much of what I sing in church today.

How much do I owe you for these?

Dear Alistair,
Thanks for letting me know the books arrived safely. The poems surely are "from another era" and you will likely note from another place for the poet was well acquainted with the heavenly land.

Please accept the books as a gift. I am sure CD would agree – and be thankful for the appreciation of one of his nephews.

My father still keeps in touch with Ron [Gregory], who was his cousin.

I visited Ealing in the sixties, when it seemed mainly to be populated by extreme Jimites, (the Abernethie Brothers and others), and also Ilford, where Ron was out, but knew his brother Bert, now dead, and sister Winnie, married to Alan Poole, and knew their two sons quite well.

Fred is still in the Jims, and alive as far as we know. My father is David.

I have come across the following, and wonder if you, as a custodian of a brethren archive, would be interested.

  1. Supplementary Tunes for Hymns and Spiritual Songs 1951 (2 copies). 27 pp booklet, with tunes and hymns, for new metres introduced in that hymn book, prior to the green tune book (without words).

  2. Songs of Hope – A few melodies composed by Charles Leflaive. 36pp Hardback, Third edition, pub Geo Morrish Undated (probably 1930s).

  3. Various photocopied (mimeographed) hymn tunes, etc 1960s and early 1970s.
    • Summit and Wondrous Cross by Gordon Millar
    • Somerset East Tune South Africa
    • The Precious Love of Jesus
    • For Me: DJB
    • Christ is the Saviour of Sinners
    • Saviour of Sinners
    • Little Thought Samaria's Daughter: E Carren
    • The Great Physician and two anonymous ones
    • Sychar: E Burgess 1973
    • Grace and Glory: Music by Gordon Millar, words by Joe van Zanten, both from Glasgow
    • The Hell Bound Train: Words only to a country gospel song popular when J.H.S., a mid-western farmer, was king.

Most were composed by brethren musicians, but some may have been tunes commonly sung but hard to find. Two were for "Little Thought Samaria's Daughter" which was an old Sankey's (or similar) one added to the post-Aberdeen revision of the hymn book, supposedly because JTJr liked the song.

If you are interested I can post them to you.

In the late sixties, there was only one meeting in Holland at The Hague

In Germany at the same time there were:
Dusseldorf (merged with Mettmann)
Cologne (left Jims at Aberdeen en bloc)
Gummersbach
Siegen
Bendorf
Meisenheim (closed mid-seventies when there the only remaining brother went into a mental hospital)
Endbach (2 meetings, I think)
Hamburg
Several in East Germany, all of which left at Aberdeen, one in the north at Marlow, and several in the south

Switzerland - Zürich

Italy - Novi Ligure, Milan, (which I think closed late sixties) and Castelammare

[Ashley is a daughter of Karl and Peggy Paluga.]

Dear Mr. Gordon Rainbow,
I am writing this letter to you to thank you for several different things. You have been a blessing to my family and I am very grateful for you.

First I would like to thank you for the encouragement you have given me in your letters to my parents.

I would also like to thank you for the time and energy you have spent e-mailing, talking with, and praying for my family.

Next I want to thank you specifically for the godly counsel you have used your time so wisely to give us.

Finally, and most of all, I would like to thank you for staying true to what is scriptural even when the prices to pay for doing so were high.

Thank you for all these things, and thank you for all the things I've forgotten to mention.

I hope to hear back from you. You can e-mail me at my mom's address. Until then…

Walking with Him, Ashley Lynn Dickinson.

To: Ashley Lynn Dickinson,
Fri, 17 Sep 1999

My dear Ashley,
Thank you for writing so fully and feelingly as to the way the Lord has helped you and your family through your recent troubling situation. Your letter means a great deal to me.

I am thankful to the Lord for bringing us all into contact and that He gave me the privilege of being of some help to you and your family.

But whatever the Lord gave me to do it would have been of no avail apart from His working in all your hearts the willingness and readiness to please the Him, whatever the cost. How thankful we are to Him for that.

My life is well nigh over, but you are young and have a lifetime, however long or short in His will, to live here for His pleasure and in the service of His people.

Although they are long past, I still have vivid memories of my own teenage years.

May the Lord help and bless you richly in your walk with Him.

Thank you again for writing, Ashley. I will always be glad to hear from you and to know of your experiences in your Christian life.

With love to all, yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.

P.S. I appreciate your respectfulness very much, but we are just young people in old bodies!

Thanks for visiting MB and for your kind remarks. I try to add something each month, so come again and check "Site News" for new items.

We know the Diener family too but can't recall who John's parents were.

May the Lord bless and keep you. Give our love to John and your family.

Gordon,
Thanks for your e-mail. I faintly remember you and your wife. But I remember the name Rainbow very well.

John's parents were Caleb and Mildred Diener. They had 2 sons, Walter & John.

I faintly remember going to Hamilton, I think that was year I was 6 years old. My sister and I had fun telling people that we were the same age (when they asked). So everyone thought we were twins. For 2 months every year we are the same age.

Glad to hear that you found Phyllis. We liked Phil & Mary very much.

Something else of interest before I close. I was at JTSr's funeral. I think that was in 1953. [He died on March 29 and was buried on April 1, 1953. GAR]

Your web site is in my favorites lists.

Welcome to 'My Brethren' and thanks for you inquiry as to ministry on CD.

Yes, Kingston Bible Trust has recently issued a combined CD of Ministry by J. B. Stoney and F. E. Raven. See "Guest: Site News: KBT Report: Ministry on CD-ROM" for information. It may be ordered by email through Malcolm Withell.

There is a link there to 'Bible and Books' where other CD's are available. However they are not at all of the quality of the KBT CD, and I would not recommend ordering them unless you just can't wait. The KBT CD is in HTML readable by your browser and is excellent quality.
