I was brought up in an 'open brethren' denomination, and have over time found it to be of advantage in general life and well-being to no longer associate as such.
You said: "MB is a growing site – opened in November 1998 – and, as yet, does not cover all historical developments. There are, however, a number of documents available dealing with the events of 1959 and following which will be posted as time permits. When these are posted you will find a notice on Guests: Site News: New Activity".

Dear Chris,
Before I address your questions may I ask,
Now as to your questions:
"Open" is commonly used, but "closed", or occasionally "close", is far less used to my knowledge. The common term is "exclusive".
Usage of the terms seems to vary. I have even heard both "closed" and "exclusive" applied to certain "open" meetings – Gospel Halls – considered rigid or "tight" as to reception.
My comments are based on knowledge of the situation in North America, and to a lesser degree as to "exclusives" only in Britain and Australasia.
The balance of the reply is posted on Guests: My Answer 2: The Darby Bible. |

I trust this will be of some value to you, and look forward to further contact.
Yours in our Lord, Gordon.
To: Alistair Deayton
Dear Alistair,
I had wondered if you were related to CD. I'll be happy to send you the balance of his poems and I'm sure you will enjoy and profit from them, as I have. Be patient though, I will probably send them by surface mail.
My experience has been different from yours. I came in from "outside" – as we used to speak – in 1950, the year you were born.
I have sought to serve Him in the gospel whenever there was opportunity. As a younger man, for many of the years from 1960–70, I felt the Lord's support in preaching almost every noon hour on a downtown street corner – mostly alone.
While I later became disillusioned and – temporarily only, thank God
– forsook principles which had moved me as a young believer, His
matchless grace has drawn me back to my beginnings.
Awaiting your address.
Yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Alistair Deayton
My address is …
My great-uncle Charles had three brothers;
Joe had three sons, Albert, who emigrated to Sydney in the thirties
I remember hearing that Charles went out originally to Canada with Louis (or was it Lewis) Samuels ….
I think society has changed, people these days are much less likely to listen to an open air, and most of the new Christians I have met in recent years have been converted through Christian friends …
That is one thing I miss [the Lord's Supper and the service of God].
On your site you mention an Andrew Robertson. There was a man of that name from Toronto [actually, New York] who took fellowship meetings in Glasgow in the early to mid-sixties … Is this the same person?
Love in our Lord Jesus, Alistair.
To: Alistair Deayton
Dear Alistair,
Re your inquiry: Andrew Robertson is undoubtedly the same person,
but the report you have of him is not as I understand the facts.
I hope you will visit MB again. I hope to be able to add other items of interest and spiritual value, if the Lord will.
Yours in the Lord, Gordon.
From: Alistair Deayton
Uncle Charles' poetry books arrived today. Many thanks.
I look forward to spending time perusing them. They seem to come from another era when poetry rhymed and scanned, unlike so much of what
I sing in church today.
How much do I owe you for these?
Alistair Deayton.
To: Alistair Deayton
Dear Alistair,
Please accept the books as a gift. I am sure CD would agree – and
be thankful for the appreciation of one of his nephews.
Yours in our Lord, Gordon.
From: Alistair Deayton
Thank you very much for these. I have yet to show them to my father, but I
am sure he will also wish me to convey his thanks to you, Gordon.
Alistair Deayton.
From: Alistair Deayton
My father still keeps in touch with Ron [Gregory], who was his cousin.
I visited Ealing in the sixties, when it seemed mainly to be populated by extreme Jimites, (the Abernethie Brothers and others), and also Ilford, where Ron was out, but knew his brother Bert, now dead, and sister Winnie, married to Alan Poole, and knew their two sons quite well.
Fred is still in the Jims, and alive as far as we know. My father is David.
Alistair Deayton.
From: Alistair Deayton
Ron Gregory's mother's maiden name was Clewley, not Deayton, she was a
sister of my grandmother, not my grandfather Joseph Deayton.
Have you been contacted by Charles Deayton's Grand-daughter-in-law in
Melbourne.
Alistair Deayton.
To: Alistair Deayton
Dear Alistair, No, I have not heard from CD's granddaughter-in-law in Melbourne, but
would be delighted if she would visit MB and leave me a message. She may
find some information of interest.
Yours in the Lord, Gordon.
From: Alistair Deayton
I have come across the following, and wonder if you, as a custodian of a
brethren archive, would be interested.
Most were composed by brethren musicians, but some may have been tunes
commonly sung but hard to find. Two were for "Little Thought Samaria's
Daughter" which was an old Sankey's (or similar) one added to the
post-Aberdeen revision of the hymn book, supposedly because JTJr liked the song.
If you are interested I can post them to you.
Alistair Deayton
To: Alistair Deayton
Dear Alistair,
I haven't yet heard from CD's granddaughter-in-law in Melbourne. If
you don't mind suggesting it to her, or giving me her e-mail address, it
would be appreciated. She might have access to further information.
Thanks again, Alistair.

Dear Dorothy, Yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.

Just wanted to say "Good Work on Job Well Done". I come to your site frequently to keep updated.
Prior to the 'split' and my leaving, I went through a year of horror because of the beliefs they had and I was alone so went along with them until I could no longer be a hypocrite.
I noticed I needed to update my email address [changed above] and, doing so, wanted to say "Hi" again.
To: Dottie Delano
Dear Dottie, I certainly sympathise with you in all you went through before leaving. We had similar experiences, but like you our trust in the Lord Jesus remains firm by His grace.
With love in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
To: Vanessa d'Esterre
Dear Vanessa,
I trust you will return and find other items of interest as well.
In the Lord, Gordon Rainbow.
From: Ashley Lynn Dickinson
[Ashley is a daughter of Karl and Peggy Paluga.]
Dear Mr. Gordon Rainbow, First I would like to thank you for the encouragement you have given me in your letters to my parents.
I would also like to thank you for the time and energy you have spent e-mailing, talking with, and praying for my family.
Next I want to thank you specifically for the godly counsel you have used your time so wisely to give us.
Finally, and most of all, I would like to thank you for staying true to what is scriptural even when the prices to pay for doing so were high.
Thank you for all these things, and thank you for all the things I've forgotten to mention.
I hope to hear back from you. You can e-mail me at my mom's address. Until then…
Walking with Him, Ashley Lynn Dickinson.
To: Ashley Lynn Dickinson,
My dear Ashley, I am thankful to the Lord for bringing us all into contact and that He
gave me the privilege of being of some help to you and your family.
But whatever the Lord gave me to do it would have been of no avail apart from His working in all your hearts the willingness and readiness to please the Him, whatever the cost. How thankful we are to Him for that.
My life is well nigh over, but you are young and have a lifetime, however long or short in His will, to live here for His pleasure and in the service of His people.
Although they are long past, I still have vivid memories of my own
teenage years.
May the Lord help and bless you richly in your walk with Him.
Thank you again for writing, Ashley. I will always be glad to hear from
you and to know of your experiences in your Christian life.
With love to all, yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.
P.S. I appreciate your respectfulness very much, but we are just young
people in old bodies!
From: Ashley Lynn Dickinson
Dear Gordon and Betty, I hope to be able to share my testimony with you in the future. I read yours on your web page and thought perhaps you would like to know mine. I will plan to share it with you when I've got more time.
Thanks again, Ashley Lynn.
To: Ashley Lynn Dickinson
My dear Ashley, Of course, news of you and your family – and your progress in
your exercises – will always be most welcome.
Our love to all in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Ashley Dickinson
Dear Gordon, I am ready and willing to type more for you as soon as you let me know
what it is you would like me to do next.
Thanx, Ashley.
To: Ashley Dickinson
Dear Ashley,
It's especially encouraging that you were blessed by the article itself. We all need to develop in our affections for Christ.
You'll see by the Guest Book that the site is appreciated and you surely can take satisfaction in your part in it.
We are all looking forward to meeting you and Rachel, and Karl and
Peggy, at the end of May.
With love to you and all in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Susan Diener
It was great to discover your interesting website! I have been browsing this site on & off for a few weeks.
I was a Ewing from Westfield, NJ. My parents are Phillips and Eunice Ewing.
My husband John and myself and our 3 children left in 1975.
Thanks Gordon for your web site.
Love in the Lord, Susan Diener.
To: Susan Diener
Dear Susan, I didn't know your parents personally but my wife, Betty (Reid of Toronto), remembers them very well,
We know the Diener family too but can't recall who John's parents were.
It's good to hear that your children have been retained for the Lord,
despite the sorrowful experiences through which we all went.
May the Lord bless and keep you. Give our love to John and your family.
Yours in the Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Susan Diener
Gordon, John's parents were Caleb and Mildred Diener. They had 2 sons, Walter & John.
I faintly remember going to Hamilton, I think that was year I was 6 years
old. My sister and I had fun telling people that we were the same age (when they asked). So everyone thought we were twins. For 2 months every year we are the same age.
Glad to hear that you found Phyllis. We liked Phil & Mary very much.
Something else of interest before I close. I was at JTSr's funeral. I
think that was in 1953. [He died on March 29 and was buried on April 1, 1953. GAR]
Your web site is in my favorites lists.
Take care, love to your wife. Susan Diener.

Dear Michael,
See MB's Site News: Bibles and Books for Dover's web site on which you will find a complete catalogue.
As I'm having trouble emailing Dover, I'm sending this to Richard Reed

Thanks Gordon. In Christ, Michael.
To: Bernard C. Duckworth
Dear Bernard, Yes, Kingston Bible Trust has recently issued a combined CD of Ministry by J. B. Stoney and F. E. Raven. See "Guest: Site News: KBT Report: Ministry on CD-ROM" for information. It may be ordered by email through Malcolm Withell.
There is a link there to 'Bible and Books' where other CD's are
available. However they are not at all of the quality of the KBT CD, and
I would not recommend ordering them unless you just can't wait. The KBT
CD is in HTML readable by your browser and is excellent quality.
You will find a good selection of ministry by various brethren on
MB. Other information can be found in the Biography and History groups. And
I will try to answer any questions you may have.
Details of your background would be of interest.
In the Lord, Gordon.
From: Bernard C. Duckworth
Do you have any of the above authors works on CD? I would be interested in some of them, especially C. A. Coates.
Thanks, Bernard Duckworth.
To: Bernard C. Duckworth
Dear Bernard, Apparently you didn't receive my reply of Mon, 25 Feb 2002 to your earlier inquiry. A copy of that reply is appended. [See above.]
I hope this will be of help to you, and would be glad to hear from you again.

Dear Gordon, I don't have time to write now but want to add mail address, etc. …
With love in Christ to you and Betty and brethren that you may see locally, Paul.
From: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Gordon and Betty, Some local visits to ourselves have taken place, but we are not saying much about them yet to see if some light might shine in among the brethren through those who are concerned to make the visits.
With love in our Lord Jesus to you, Paul and Janet.
To: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Paul and Janet, — has also had several visits but, other than seeing family after 30 odd years, nothing to encourage.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon and Betty.
From: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Gordon and Betty, I did not get onto your site just now, but you had some reference to other brethren sites. What specifically did you have in mind?
I am troubled by some bad remarks in the Guest Book especially by a
Peter French in Melbourne. I mean the Cloudnet Wyman Guestbook at Page 26 currently.
Well, this library is about to close so will send love in Christ, from Paul and Janet.
To: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Paul, Yes, I can understand your concern as to some remarks in Dick Wyman's
guest book.
Andrew phoned to tell me of your call. He appreciates the contact with
you. We all feel with you and Janet as to the emotional pressure that will
be caused by the recent visits from your childred to lure you back.
Andrew also mentioned that you have the 3 volumes of Hubert Calvey's
'Confrontation ...'.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Gordon,
Gordon, I have recently acquired the complete set of Calvey letters from Elizabeth Smith so will discuss that on my next memo.
To: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Paul,
The reference in the 'Disclaimer' is not to any 'brethren' web sites such as Dick's, Steve's or others,
I look forward to hearing from you re Mr. Calvey's books.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
From: Paul Druckenmiller
Hi Gordon,
Please give me your mailing address. I think I can send them US Certified mail if that applies to Canada or any way you might suggest. If you feel like phoning, my phone is —.
I will be glad to hear from you about these.
With love in our Lord Jesus: Paul D.
To: Paul Druckenmiller
Dear Paul,
In reading Volume 1, I was impressed with the sober spirit in which Mr. Calvey wrote.
As my co-editor lives in California and will be doing the actual scanning it would be best to send them direct to him.
Thanks for your phone number. It would be good to speak with you.
Affectionately in our Lord Jesus, Gordon.
Re: Paul Druckenmiller
Paul and I had a very brotherly and interesting telephone conversation on Saturday evening.
To: Ted Druckenmiller
